곶자왈은 지구상에 제주도에만 있는 지형이다. 남방계 식물이 자랄 수 있는 한계선과 북방식물이 자랄 수 있는 한계선이 만나는 곳 바로 그 곳이 제주도다. 그래서 곶자왈은 여타 지형과는 확인 구분되는 지형의 모습을 가지고있다.
나는 그 풍경을 오래전부터 관찰했고 카메라에 담았다. 늘상 변함이 없을것 같은 그곳은 시시때때로 다양한 풍경을 보여준다. 천천히 그리고 조금씩... 그러나 아이러니 하게도 항상 그곳에 있을줄 알았던 이 풍경은 1-20년 전부터 급격히 줄어들고 파괴되고있다. 마치 제목처럼 마지막으로 남을 파라다이스가 될것처럼..
내가 찍고자하는것은 풍경의 변화만은 아니다. 시간과 거기에서 풍겨져오는 냄새 그리고 소리까지 담으려했다. 이 작업은 곶자왈이라는 곳이 많은이의 관심의 대상이 될때까지 계속 하려한다.
I have been watching and taking shots of Gotjawal for some time. Gotjawal is a name for mysterious spots in Jejudo island and nowhere else in the world where greens of different temperatures grow together. Unfortunately, these spots are disappearing gradually, as the title indicates, bearing its name of 'last paradise'.
My camera tries to capture not only the flow of time but also the scent and the sounds hoping the paradise lasts, physically and mentally.
